Tips for Starting Your New Role
Are you worried about starting your first supply day?
Don't worry, it's normal to be anxious, but we're here to help you fight the nerves!
Yes, starting a new job is daunting, especially when it's your first supply role; however, we've put together some top tips to help you relax and put your mind at ease:
- Do your research - Check start times, behaviour policies and the dress code.
- Pack your essentials - Be prepared and make sure you pack the essentials, such as pens, stickers, whiteboard markers and have a few backup activities ready too (just in case).
- Arrive early - Make sure you arrive early, as this gives you time to settle in, meet key staff and review plans.
- Build connections quickly - Introduce yourself to TAs, subject leaders and safeguarding officers.
- Be behaviour-ready - Set expectations calmly and consistently from the start and make sure your class know how they can and cannot behave.
- Keep lessons moving - Have extra activities ready to maintain momentum and keep your students engaged.
- Stay flexible - You may cover new subjects or year groups, so you need to be adaptable and ready for any challenge.
- Leave a clear handover - Before you leave the classroom, you should leave a clear handover, so note what was covered and how pupils responded.
